Merit Badge Counselor

As of October 1, 2019 the only OFFICAL Merit Badge Counselor List is available on Scoutbook.  See your Unit Leader (Scoutmaster, Venturing Crew Advisor) for a counselor’s name and the required Blue Card. *.

Scoutmasters, Venturing Crew Advisors and their Assistants in assigning Merit Badge Counselors to Scouts in their respective units. Scouts need to visit with their unit leader and get a signed Merit Badge Card commonly called ‘Blue Cards’ before making contact with a Merit Badge Counselor

Become a Merit Badge Counselor

To be added to the list as a Merit Badge Counselor you need to turn in the following forms to the Scout Office. Please be advised a max of 20 merit badges are allowed be person. Review the Council Policy on Number of Merit Badges for Merit Badge Counselors.

  1. Adult Application and Background check Authorization Form
  2. Copy of Youth Protection Training Certificate
  3. Merit Badge Counselor Information Form
  4. $25 (if not already registered with a unit) National Registration Fee
  5. Additional certifications are needed to teach the following merit badges. These requirements can be found in the Guide to Advancement beginning on page 44.
    • Archery
    • Canoeing
    • Climbing
    • Kayaking
    • Life Saving
    • Motor Boating
    • Rifle Shooting
    • Rowing
    • Scuba Diving
    • Shotgun Shooting
    • Small Boat Sailing
    • Snow Sports
    • Swimming
    • Water Sports
    • White Water
  6. It is highly recommended only those in the following professions are merit badge counselors for the following merit badges.
    • Dentistry
    • Law
    • Health Care Professions
    • Veterinary Medicine
  7. Citizenship In Society Counselors apply the same way as above. Once applications are received a member of the Advancement Committee will interview the counselor for approval. Counselors must take the online training, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Scouting Volunteer Training, https://training.scouting.org/courses/SCO_1800, and review the appropriate documentation attached below.

To Remove or Add Merit Badges

If you are on the list and would like to make changes, please send in a “Merit Badge Counselor Information Form” to Add or Remove merit badges. 

To Be Renewed for the Coming Year

Merit Badge Counselors who are on the list for the current year, have current Youth Protection Training, and are registered with a unit, will have their registration as a Merit Badge Counselor automatically renewed for the upcoming year.  Those who are NOT registered with a unit, who are on the list with current Youth Protection Training, may pay the $25 to have their registration renewed for another year.

If you no longer wish to be a Merit Badge Counselor, please send in a “Merit Badge Counselor Information Form” to remove merit badges or send an email informing the council’s registrar to be removed from the list.
